[Cassel is looking just - crazy excited right now. For him, anyway; he's grinning wide, one of his legs jogging as he speaks.]

Hey, Skywalker. [Guess who got out early. And guess who's caught up with what you've been doing.]

Point one, hi, but I said that. Point two, you totally are a weapon of mass destruction, I don't know why you never used that line on me before. Point three, I have a billion things to tell you, starting with - Star Wars?

spam 1 {mid-afternoon 5/13; deck}

[The first thing Cassel does when he gets out of Zero - besides calling Chris, which always comes first - is he takes Patches up on deck. It's kind of stupid, but he's missed this dog like crazy, and he's more than happy to spend an hour or two in the fresh air throwing a ball for him.]

[For those who know him, he looks weirdly content, like a weight's been lifted; for those who don't, he looks a hell of a lot more like a normal kid than he's ever looked before.]

spam 2 {mid-afternoon thru evening 5/13; gym}

[When Kon suggested he start working in the gym for real, it had seemed like a weird idea at first, but the more he thinks about it the more it seems like - maybe it wouldn't be so bad. So he says he'll try it out, at least, and if he's going to try he's going to start right away. No point waiting.]

[He's still learning the ropes beyond just cleaning tonight, but he's around, keeping things as organized as he can on Kon's direction.]

[The camera's on to prove a point: that he's genuine about this, because he is, extremely. Discomfort shows on his face, because he's not used to apologizing, and he can't look at the camera for more than a couple seconds at a time, but he goes for it anyway.]

I'd like to talk to you, if that's cool. Here or in person. Or I can just text if you'd rather do that, I - you know. Whatever you want.

[It's tempting to yell at Zane, or to ask if he's okay, or to say nothing at all, or to go find him in person now that he can. None of these sound particularly right, though, especially after everything he's ~~stalked~~ read over the last hour or so, so he reverts to sarcasm. Decently affectionate sarcasm, but sarcasm nonetheless.]

Mine too. [He says this easily. It's true.]

[Tossing his head to gesture that they should go up to the deck, he leads the way again, glancing back at Chris to make sure he's coming.]

You like dogs, right?

[He doesn't say anything to this, unwilling to admit it. He follows close behind, balancing his tray while eating off it at the same time]

I like some dogs.

[Not Kon's dog]

[After a pause, he falls back so they're walking side by side.]

He's okay. He's not a spy cam or anything.

You . . . want me to send him away?

[He turns to watch Patches, unsure]

I don't know. I guess not, but. We're probably not going to get along. Dogs have this sense about who their masters like and don't like.

He liked me back when I didn't like Kon.

[There's a moment of hesitation, during which Patches catches up and walks at Cassel's other side. Then he reaches for Chris's hand.]

He's cool. I swear.

...Yeah?

[Chris slides his hand into Cassel's without even thinking about it, giving the dog another nervous glance]

What?

[It's a relief, not being pushed away. He squeezes Chris's hand.]

Patches. He's cool. He just - wants to play.

Animals, they don't ever think you're lying, you know? They're way more honest than people are.

[He grins at the hand-squeeze, lightening up a little now that he knows Patches isn't a carbon copy of Kon with four paws]

Oh, yeah? I didn't know that. We didn't have pets or anything.

We had cats. Stray cats mostly. Never really pets in the house.

[ . . . and they're on deck now, so he's just gonna veer away from that topic. Instead he sits down on the boards in a tucked-away corner and throws the ball, watching Patches run after it with a satisfied smile.]

[It's a nice, summer night for once. Chris drops down next to Cassel, leaning his back against the railing]

Yeah, our place was too nice for pets. My mom would've gone mental if we had pet hair all over the place.

[He smiles crookedly, picking at his sandwich.]

Ours wasn't.

Anyway.

[He wants to ask about Chris's mom, but thinks maybe that's stupid, so he doesn't say anything else.]

[Yep. Sure is good dinner he's focusing all his attention on right now]

...So how soon until you know how to kickbox?

Uh. [He clears his throat.] Not sure. I'm training a lot, every day, so I'm thinking sooner than later. James taught me some, maybe he'll teach me some more.

Oh, yeah, that's what I was gonna tell you. I was thinking about getting one of those things Iris was making.

Oh, yeah? What's Iris making?

The - Lassiebots? They're like panic buttons, she said. I thought I could get one and put your name on it for port, so if anything happened . . .

Oh, yeah. Yeah, definitely. I mean, I'll probably be with Rorschach, so..yeah.

Maybe there's a way to connect them, I don't know.

If your name's on it, you'll know if something goes wrong. If you get one and put my name on it, I'll know if something goes wrong on your end. That's how she explained it, I think.

[from his back pocket, Chris pulls out his communicator, opening it up and starting to use the text function to make a list]

I think we should, um. We should make plans, in case the worst happens and everything goes to shit and stuff.

Yeah, okay. Sounds good.

Where do we start?

Well, I think we need to pick like some sort of symbol or word. So that way if we get totally fucking lost across the universe, we can leave it up on places so that way the other guy knows that we've been there.
